she likes it for the packaging.
when i think japanese cuisine, good sugar doesn't usually come to mind.
(trust.. i've lived there... it's always a little low on sugar/fat/all good things and high in red bean paste and strange fake substances...)
but... i decided to try a sensible cherry (surrounded in a jello nugget).
aaah!

blech. gotta stick to the fatty buttery sugary goodness of proper european or american bakeries! asians are no good with sugar or butter!
Classic. When the Japanese employees of the company I work for offer the Americans "candy," it's always the best seeing their reactions to what are essentially cough drops in pretty packaging.
I have to say I agree, esp. regarding the red been paste! Whoever had that brainchild was probably pals with the person who got the bright idea to use taro root as a flavor for baked goods / ice cream...
On an unrelated note, though - were you in the "Disease" episode of "Rescue Me" that was on TV this week? I was watching with my husband and said to him, I swear one of the dancing nurses is someone whose blog I read & love! Am I crazy or was that you?

ah. i love wagashi. but it's an acquired taste just like sushi. i love it probably because i grew up there.
pastry in japan happens to be amazing though. pretty much all the rm from japland will testify for you. true story.
Have you had Mochi Ice Cream? Best stuff ever. You HAVE to try it!
